Shui Lee Hnetinka summary about Daniel H. Weiss new President and CEO at Metropolitan Museum of Art

With questions looming as to who will assume the role as its new director, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has named Daniel H. Weiss, the institution’s current president and chief operating officer, to a new post as president and CEO. Weiss had been named interim CEO earlier this year after Thomas P. Campbell announced that he would resign as director.

As president and chief executive officer, Weiss is currently in charge of the museum’s finances. Along with his directorship, Campbell, who officially leaves the museum on June 30, had previously held the CEO position at the museum—today’s announcement means that the CEO and director titles have been split apart. The new director, when appointed, will be in charge of artistic direction and curatorial priorities—and will report to Weiss.
“He is a scholar of art history, he is a seasoned leader of complex institutions, and he is committed to the museum’s mission,” Daniel Brodsky, the chairman of the Met’s board of trustees, said of Weiss in a statement. “His contributions as president of the Met during the past two years have been exemplary, both in supporting the museum’s vision and in establishing a sustainable path for our financial and managerial operations.”

Under Campbell, the Met had come under fire from critics and its own staff, leaving some to wonder whether the museum was a “great institution in decline,” as one former curator told the New York Times. In a statement, Weiss struck a more optimistic note. “Our museum’s collections and professional staff set the world standard for exhibitions, scholarship, preservation, education, and public programming, and as thoughtful advocates for the importance of art in our culture. I am equally humbled and excited to continue working closely with the board and the museum’s unparalleled staff.”
Daniel H. Weiss was born in Newark and raised on Long Island. He holds a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in Western Medieval and Byzantine Art and an M.B.A. from the Yale School of Management. He earned his B.A. at George Washington University and an M.A. in art history from Johns Hopkins. After receiving his Ph.D., Weiss joined the art history faculty at Johns Hopkins, and in six years rose to full professor and chair of the department. Three years later Weiss was appointed to the deanship of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins. From 2005 to 2013 he served as President and Professor of Art History at Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania, and in 2013 he became president of Haverford College.
As an artist i must say that his trajectory has lead him to this point and the museum can not be on better hands than his. Please note that you cant be de gawkers and prevent the valleywag.
